The Case of the Discontinued Tenugui

Post by ChefKnivesToGo »

When I first started shopping for these Tenugui towels I was given a catalog of about 250 designs to look through. Of those we selected about a dozen and have since added more. My favorite one of all of them was a design of some blowfish. I love blowfish and it looked like they were all swimming in a fish tank with nice colors. I ordered them all and they wrote me back and said: "we're sorry the blowfish tenugui is discontinued". So I wrote them back that I was really looking forward to that one and asked them to see if they had any spare inventory left at the factory and they kindly entertained my request and told me they were out.

But of course, I can't let it go. hahaha

So I write them back after a month and say I REALLY want that blowfish tenugui and could they please find out if they would bring it back into production if I ordered 100 instead of 10?

They relented and are making them now! :)

I'm sure my contact's conversation with the maker went something like this:

Distributor: I have this customer who is obsessed with the blowfish tenugui. Can you please make them for him?
Factory Rep: I'm very sorry but they were discontinued years ago. We have 250 other styles in stock. Can't he pick something else?
Distributor: He REALLY wants the Blowfish! Do you still have the screen for printing it? He now wants 100!
Factory: Fine, tell your crazy American customer we will make the blowfish for him.

Mark, I love how your obsession with the blowfish tenugui got the discontinued item back in production.

So, did Sue roll her eyes and ask you what you were thinking ordering that many?

Just looked at the page, I might have to order a few. They are great.

She was with me on this one. Sue, Lacy and I picked ones we liked out of the catalog and we all liked that one. :)

Well, now that I see the image, I'm all in. They are absolutely charming! And given the early response here, do you thing 100 will be enough?

About those blowfish...can you import the real thing, now that I have several of your sujis?

Great. Are you taking preorders? A go fund me campaign to pay for them?

Since there is only 100, number them and advertise that it’s a limited run

Well, this one was lost and then found again when they recently came back in stock for a moment or two. Don't tell my wife but I think I'm in love . . .

I had one of those Takeda Tenugui I hadn't opened laying on my desk and my 4yr old granddaughter saw it and made me give it to her(like I could say no.) I guess I'll have to buy another if they ever restock.
